Biodiversiteit op de Scheldeschorren OMA
Van den Bergh, E.; Huiskes, A.; Criel, B.; Meire, P..
The tidal marshes along the Scheldt estuary are rather unique in Europe, because they still exist along the complete salinity gradient. Key ecological factors for the vegetation are salinity, tidal regime and current and historical management. A general portrait with the most characterising plant species as well as a succession scheme are presented for salt, brackish and fresh tidal marshes separately, because they have few plant species and vegetation types in common. Tidal regime changes as a combined effect of sea level rise and the channel deepening in the Westerscheldt. This affects the marsh vegetation. Biodiversity patterns and factors affecting the distribution of species on the tidal marshes are discussed for plants, gastropodes, arthropodes and...

Bioencapsulation of the antibacterial drug sarafloxacin in nauplii of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia franciscana</i> OMA
Dixon, B.A.; Van Poucke, S.; Chair, M.; Dehasque, M.; Nelis, H.J.; Sorgeloos, P.; De Leenheer, A.P..
Nauplii of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia franciscana</i> were enriched with the antibacterial drug sarafloxacin hydrochloride to determine if levels effective against four pathogenetic strains of <i>Vibrio</i> spp. would accumulate in brine shrimp. Three vibrio strains were <i>Vibrio anguillarum</i>; the fourth was <i>V. vulnificus</i>. Concentrations of sarafloxacin ranging from 1 to 40% (weight: volume) were incorporated into the oil phase of Super Selco brine shrimp diets. Enriched nauplii and controls were sampled at 2h interval for 24h. Antibiotic sensitivity testing was evaluated with a modification of the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. A microbiological assay with <i>Escherichia coli</i>...

Bioengineering of hatcheries for marine fish and shellfish OMA
Sorgeloos, P..
Dependable availability of quality fry to stock growout production systems has been one of the most critical factors in the commercial success of industrial production of fish and shellfish. Over the past two decades intensive larviculture of several fish and shellfish species has expanded into a multimillion dollar industry. Although much progress has been made in identifying the dietary requirements of the larvae of various aquaculture species, the mass culture of their early larval stages still requires the use of live feeds, i.e., selected species of microalgae, the rotifer <i>Brachionus</i>, and the brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> . The latter two substitutes for natural zooplankton are eventually supplemented with selected lipids...

Biogeochemical behaviour of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in the Scheldt estuary during the period 1981-1983 OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J.; Elskens, M.; Gillain, G.; Goeyens, L..
Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb have been analysed in suspended matter and water samples from the Scheldt estuary, collected during five cruises between May 1982 and May 1983. In order to evaluate the overall metal behaviour in the estuary, continuous longitudinal profiles of the total, the particulate and the dissolved metal concentrations are discussed in relation to various specific physico-chemical parameters. By means of correlation and multi-regression techniques, several estuarine processes could be identified which dominate and/or control the behaviour of the individual trace metals in three distinct areas of the Scheldt estuary. The behaviour of the four selected metals was found to show some common features, but is besides this also characterised by many...

Biological management to improve <i>Artemia</i> and salt production at Tanggu saltworks in the P.R. China OMA
Tackaert, W.; Sorgeloos, P..
The worldwide distribution of the brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> , in a variety of isolated biotopes with different ecological conditions, has resulted in the evolution of many geographical strains. Among these strains, substantial differences have been demonstrated in their nutritional quality and fitness, providing a basis for the selection of strains suitable for aquaculture. The Tanggu Saltworks (Tianjin, China) provide a unique environment for the production of <i>Artemia</i> . Unlike most other biotopes, they are characterized by a high primary productivity providing abundant food to sustain large populations of <i>Artemia</i> . Both laboratory studies and field observations, however, indicate that the local...

Biologie et écologie de <i>Leptoconchus peronii</i> (Lamarck, 1818) (Gastropoda, Coralliophilidae) récolté en Papouasie Nouvelle-Guinée, avec une redescription de l'espèce OMA
Massin, C..
<i>Leptoconchus peronii</i> lives in faviid corals and nearly always between 3 and 7m depth. Female shell shape varies with the coral host. Most of the <i>L. peronii</i> are living in pairs, the male being smaller than the female, sometimes dwarfish. The female broods about ten egg capsules in the mantle cavity. The microsculpture of the larval shell is not a specific character. The siphon is partly and longitudinally divided over all its lenght. The type series of <i>Leptoconchus peronii</i> (Lamarck, 1818) is described and figured for the first time. <i>Leptoconchus striatus</i> Rüppel, 1835, type species of the genus <i>Leptoconchus</i>, and <i>Leptoconchus schrenkii</i> Lischke,...

Biomass transport to and from an upper estuarine area by migration of juvenile Atlantic herring <i>Clupea harengus</i> OMA
Maes, J.; Ollevier, F..
A model describing fish abundance resulting from fish migration and mortality in an upper estuary is presented. This model can be used to estimate biomass transports by fish migrations between estuary and sea and to assess production assimilated in the estuary. It was applied to herring <i>Clupea harengus</i> L., a marine species with 0+ juveniles that migrate during winter to temperate European estuaries. It was shown that different mortality regimes greatly affected the number of fish that eventually emigrated and, hence, the biomass that was exported during the seaward migration. The difference between imported and exported biomass was assessed under different growth conditions and varied from positive to negative as mortality rates...

Bottom friction dissipation in the Belgian coastal regions OMA
Luo, W.; Monbaliu, J.; Berlamont, J..
The effect of bottom friction dissipation and of the different formulations used for this term on the wave evolution has been investigated in the Belgian coastal regions. Two eddy viscosity models for the bottom friction dissipation, the Madsen et al. (1988) model and Weber's (1991 a) model have been implemented in the Cycle 4 version of the third generation WAM model (Gunther et al., 1992). The wave conditions for the area of the southern North Sea were hindcasted for the February 1993 storm. The results are compared with buoy data. It is found that the net effect of bottom friction dissipation on the significant wave height hindcast is quite big, in the order of 80% (of the wave height when the bottom friction dissipation is taken into account) along the...

Boundary conditions for heavy metals at the air-sea interface OMA
Dehairs, F.A.; Dedeurwaerder, H.; Dejonghe, M.; Decadt, G.; Gillain, G.; Baeyens, W.F.J.; Elskens, I..
During 1980 and 1981 the aerosol burden as well as the wet and dry atmospheric fall-out of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Fe and Mn to the sea have been studied in the Belgian coastal area. Atmospheric Cu, Zn and Cd are observed to be introduced into the sea mainly by wet fall-out, while Fe, Mn and also Pb have a dry and wet fall-out of similar magnitude. Of these elements, Cu, Zn and Cd have the highest washout factors. Furthermore, for all elements, excepted Mn, discrepancies exist between washout factors above land and sea, with values up to 5 times larger above the sea.On the scale of the North Sea, atmospheric fall-out of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd exceeds by one order of magnitude the combined input of the rivers Scheldt, Rhine and Meuse, while fall-out of Fe and Mn is of...

Calculation of the intrinsic rate of natural increase, rm, with <i>Rhabditis marina</i> Bastian 1865 (Nematoda) OMA
Vranken, G.; Heip, C.H.R..
The life-cycle of <i>Rhabditis marina</i> Bastian 1865 was studied at 25°C and 20 promille salinity. The following demographic parameters were computed from life-table data: the intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) = 0.914 day; net reproductivity (R0) = 400; minimum generation time (Tmin) = 4.5 days; cohort generation time (Tc) = 7.2 days; mean generation time (T) = 6.6 days; and the age of an adult female when a median egg is deposited (T) = 6.1 days. Several approximate equations used to estimate rm were compared with these life-table calculations. Some give erroneous estimations and should be used with extreme caution. For...

Calculations of results in grazing experiments using the counting method OMA
Tackx, M.L.M.; Van de Vrie, E.M..
Different formulae used in the literature for calculation of ingestion rates are reviewed. Their applicability is discussed in relation to two criteria: the occurrence of saturation of the feeding and/or growth of the food particles. It is shown by simulations that the differences in results obtained by calculating ingestion following a linear or an exponential model are restricted to a few percent. Calculation of ingestion rates by substantial over- or underestimation depending on the growth constant of the food particles and the grazing time. The formula I = Vk(CztCzoekt)/N(I-ekt) is proposed for the calculation of ingestion rates under saturated circumstances.It...

Cancellariidae of Hansa Bay, Papua New Guinea (Mollusca: Neogastropoda) OMA
Verhecken, A..
The Cancellariidae collected by scientists working at the "King Leopold III" Biological Station on Laing Island, Hansa Bay, Madang Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG), have been studied. This material consists of 58 shells, belonging to six species: <i>Scalptia crenifera</i> (Sowerby, 1832), <i>S. crossei</i> (Semper, 1861), <i>S. laingensis</i> Verhecken, 1989, <i>S. obliquata</i> (Lamarck, 1822), <i>S. vangoethemi</i> sp. nov. and <i>Trigonostoma antiquatum</i> (Hinds, 1843). The collecting area was limited both geographically and bathymetrically, so that the results obtained probably reflect only part of the cancellariid fauna of PNG.

Carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition of different strains of <i>Artemia</i> sp. OMA
Spero, H.J.; Andreasen, D.J.; Sorgeloos, P..
Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios have been determined on 41 strains of <i>Artemia</i> sp. from different geographic regions around the world. The delta 13C and delta 15N values ranged between -13.7 to -25.0 per mil and -0.7 to 21.2 per mil respectively. <i>Artemia</i> delta 13C values from coastal environments are consistent with a marine origin for the food source. <i>Artemia</i> from inland salt lakes have a range of carbon isotope values suggesting C3, C4 and CAM based organic matter could form the base of the <i>Artemia</i> food chain. These data indicate that...

Carbon flows in the Westerschelde estuary (The Netherlands) evaluated by means of an ecosystem model (MOSES) OMA
Soetaert, K.; Herman, P.M.J..
The autotrophic production and heterotrophic consumption of organic matter in the Westerschelde, a highly turbid and eutrophic estuary in the Southwest Netherlands is examined by means of a dynamic simulation model. The model describes the ecologically relevant processes in thirteen spatial compartments and adequately fits most observed data. Three autotrophic processes are included in the model. Net pelagic photosynthetic production is relatively low (average 41 gC m-2 yr-1) and three spatial compartments near the turbidity maximum zone are respiratory sinks of phytoplankton biomass. According to the model, net phytobenthic primary production is more important than pelagic primary production in the upstream...

Carbon flows through meiobenthic nematodes in the Westerschelde Estuary OMA
Li, J.; Vincx, M.; Herman, P.M.J..
A time dynamic model was used to estimate carbon flows through nematodes in an intertidal benthic ecosystem in the Westerschelde Estuary, The Netherlands. The model calibrated the nematode biomass observed from March 1991 to February 1992. The forcing functions of the model included meiobenthos biomass, macrobenthos biomass, bacterial density, chlorophyll-a concentration, and other abiotic data such as temperature and day length. We estimate that the nematode population had a low level of standing stock 249 mg C m(-2), but a high level of carbon flow. It consumed 98 mg C m(-2) d(-1) and produced 22 mg C m(-2) d(-1). Defecation was 73 mg C m(-2) d(-1). Losses in respiration, excretion and natural death were only 3 mg C m(-2) d(-1). The annual P/B was 32 for...
